Spanish Steps - Built close to the old northern gates to the City of Rome,
the Spanish Steps served to help channel thousands of Pilgrims, as quickly
as possible,
towards The Vatican.
By the 18th Century the area was densely populated
with hotels and guest houses to cope with demand.

It's still a great area to stay, and
you can check Hotel availability using the search box to the left
of this page. There are good quality rooms right here, and some
are really special for a romantic occaision!

These days this most beautiful part of Rome offers much more, with Renaissance
and Baroque art, high fashion, superb restaurants and some of the most
stunning panoramic views across the City.
You can get to the Spanish Steps by using the Metro (Red Line, Spagna),
which is more convenient than the bus routes, although we recommend that
you try to plan a route that allows you to arrive on foot.
To get the very best first impression use the Via Sistina, this brings
you to the top of the steps with a magnificent view below you. You can
then make your way down in to the Piazza di Spagna, where the crowds throng
around.
You might also want to try Babington’s Tea Rooms, in the Piazza,
while you’re here. Serving traditional English fayre since 1896,
you can order scones with jam, Earl Grey tea, and even a cooked English
breakfast!

tip:
if you’re
planning to eat whilst here, go left at the foot of the steps
and head
for the Via di Propaganda. After a few yards, on the left hand side,
and tucked into a little courtyard, are three superb restaurants that
will more than satisfy your needs – and you can watch the crowds
pass by from a cooling vantage point. |
If some serious shopping is on the menu, then the Spanish Steps provides
the opportunity to browse the best of Bulgari, Valentino, Versace and Armani.
Head for the Via dei Condotti, straight on from the bottom of the Steps,
and you’ll be right in the thick of it. Fashion shops mingle with
jewellery and fine art, and this is a magnet for the style conscious of
Rome.

One more tip for good measure. To
see the Spanish Steps at their very best, try visiting in the month
of May, and use
one of our fantastic mp3 "Rome
Self Guided Tours" to get the full
story.
The Steps are decorated from top to bottom with
glorious displays
of
Azaleas,
which
add to the romance of the occasion. |
